Sachi & Co. Dentistry provides root canal services in Torrance, CA.
When an infection or damage reaches the pulp at the center of a tooth, a root canal is needed. Although root canals have a reputation for being painful, we make sure every procedure is a comfortable experience for our patients. We do this by using state-of-the-art equipment, local anesthesia, and CT scans to ensure excellent results. With a root canal, we can preserve your natural tooth and prevent the need for extraction and costly tooth replacements.
What Happens During a Root Canal
The infected tooth is opened so we can access and remove the diseased tissues. Next, we clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth to safeguard against reinfection. We use a rubber-like material to fill the space, then use a temporary restoration to protect your tooth while a dental laboratory fabricates a high-quality dental crown that will seal the tooth. Once this is complete, you’ll come back to our office and we will bond the crown in place.
While the root canal itself is painless, you will most likely have some tenderness and tooth sensitivity after the procedure. Cold compresses and over-the-counter pain medications can be used to alleviate this discomfort. You may decide to return to work or school immediately after your procedure, or take the rest of the day to recover at home, but there’s generally no need to take an extended amount of time off to recover.
Frequently Asked Questions About Root Canals
Is a root canal painful?
We take pride in providing painless root canal procedures. Local anesthetic injections are used to ensure that you will be comfortable during your treatment. After your root canal, you may experience some mild pain, but this usually resolves quickly.
How long does a root canal take?
Assuming your root structure does not have any abnormalities, you can expect your root canal to take about 60-90 minutes.
How do you know you need a root canal?
It’s very rare that a patient comes to our office knowing they need a root canal, unless they’ve had one before. Instead, their chief complaint is an intense toothache that is either constant or causes extreme pain upon chewing, pressure, or exposure to hot and cold. Sometimes there is a small pimple or bump on the gums near the affected tooth.
Can I eat after a root canal?
Once your mouth is no longer numb, you can eat again. Try to stick with soft foods like soup, yogurt, and applesauce until your tooth feels less sensitive and uncomfortable. If you have a temporary restoration, you will be given special instructions on what types of foods to eat while waiting for your permanent crown to be placed.
Is a tooth dead after a root canal?
Yes, your tooth is considered dead after a root canal. The tissues inside the tooth are removed so the tooth will no longer experience any feeling or sensation.
